ARTIST'S STATEMENT
The Alchemy of Becoming explores what happens when we stop rejecting the parts of ourselves we've deemed unworthy and instead make them the subject of our art. This body of work emerged from a pivotal moment of revisiting an old sketch—a chaotic scribble I'd created months earlier in a dark emotional state and initially experienced with revulsion. Returning to it after cycles of personal growth, I saw it differently: not as shameful mess, but as beautiful documentation of my human experience. That shift sparked this collection, which investigates the transformative power of radical acceptance and our capacity to hold the entirety of our emotional landscape with compassion.
My process mirrors the emotional journey itself, adapting to whatever needs to be expressed. Some pieces begin with black marker or pen mapping what feels dense or stuck, then layer in high-flow acrylics, paint pens, and gold materials as my internal state shifts. Others start with dark, textured paint conveying murky shadows, with gold applied on top to reveal the radiance within. Still others capture moments after the storm—expressions of flow, ease, and grace that emerge once the density has been witnessed and released. The black marker or pen reconnects me with the uninhibited four-year-old who scribbled without caring what others thought. The gold represents the sacred radiance I've learned to recognize within my shadows. These contrasts throughout the collection—dark and light, chaotic and ordered, messy and elegant—mirror the paradoxes we all contain. The work itself becomes the alchemy: not erasing darkness, but discovering its inherent luminosity. If viewers leave feeling a deeper appreciation for the messiness within their own experience, this work has fulfilled its purpose.
